The MobED mobile robot platform, developed by Hyundai Motor Group, won the “Winner” award at the 2026 Red Dot Design Awards for its innovative design and usability.
The “Refined Edge” design philosophy reflects Hyundai Robotics LAB’s focus on improving human-centric interaction and real-life use.
It offers a scalable platform that combines advanced engineering, AI control, and human-centered design.
MobED (Mobile Eccentric Droid), developed by Hyundai Motor Group’s Robotics LAB unit, was awarded the “Winner” prize in the Product Design category at the 2026 Red Dot Design Awards, one of the world’s most prestigious design competitions.
Developed by Robotics LAB within the group, MobED stands out as a new generation mobile robot platform designed to operate seamlessly in various terrain and usage scenarios.
Minwoo Park, President and Head of Hyundai Motor Group AVP Division, commented on the matter: “The question here was never whether the technology worked; the real question was whether it worked in real-life situations and on a large scale. With MobED’s Red Dot success, we have fully demonstrated this. This is a real-world application of Physical AI, and we will continue to push the boundaries of this technology.”
Why did MobED win the Red Dot Design Award?
MobED embodies Robotics LAB’s “Refined Edge” design philosophy, which focuses on improving the natural integration of robotic systems into everyday living environments. This approach guides both the platform’s distinctive design language and its interactive structure, making robots feel more accessible, intuitive, and reliable in human-centered spaces.
The platform combines Hyundai Motor Group’s Drive and Lift technology with the Eccentric Wheel mechanism. This allows it to maintain stability in challenging conditions such as uneven surfaces, inclines, and pavements. Advanced mobility enables robot platforms to be used not only in controlled indoor spaces but also in the dynamic environments of real life.
Furthermore, MobED combines purpose-built functional design with AI-based control systems, adapting to diverse scenarios ranging from logistics and delivery to inspection processes and autonomous mobility applications.
The Red Dot award highlights the platform’s balance between innovative engineering and functional design, demonstrating that mobility solutions go beyond traditional vehicle formats.
A Vision of Mobility Beyond Vehicles
As a scalable and modular platform, MobED represents Hyundai Motor Group’s vision for a future mobility ecosystem where robotic technologies play a crucial role in connecting and improving daily life. MobED was first introduced as a concept at the 2022 Consumer Electronics Show (CES 2022) and later showcased in a production-ready version at the 2025 International Robotics Show (iREX 2025). This development process demonstrates continuous progress in design and technology.
